What it does

Yamaha's DM5 product page says Assist on the DM5 and DM7 consoles takes on setup work so the engineer can spend the rehearsal on the mix. Four functions are listed. HA Assist suggests a head-amp gain from the input level. Naming Assist suggests a channel name and icon from the input signal. Comp Assist suggests compressor settings from the source, which the page describes as the foundation of the mix. Fader Assist suggests a balance for the channels assigned to it.

Yamaha's DM7 research note separates those jobs by method. HA Assist builds a histogram of the input and estimates a starting gain with a mathematical algorithm. Naming Assist uses machine learning to guess an instrument or a voice, and that name then feeds Fader Assist. Fader Assist watches each channel's level and moves toward a target balance with a convergence algorithm. The note calls that balance musically sensible and deliberately short of an artistic mix: a starting point you keep editing by hand. The same note describes a future "virtual mixing partner" as research, which is a different thing from the Assist screens on the console today.

The DM5 Series User Guide (published September 2026) adds the operating limits. HA Assist targets input channels that have analog gain, and the suggestion is wrong if gain compensation is on. Fader Assist targets input channels; a correct instrument icon improves it, and paired or linked channels do not take the suggestion correctly. Comp Assist is only for Dynamics 2, and only for Legacy Comp, Comp 260, FET Limiter and Diode Bridge Comp. Naming Assist offers an instrument candidate, and the icon and name are written once you accept it.

How to set it up

  1. On a DM5, press Assist on the menu bar to open the ASSIST screen. The DM7 reference manual puts the same button on the Utility screen.
  2. Pick the assist type. The DM5 guide covers HA, Fader, Comp and Naming. The DM7 manual's Assist chapter documents HA, Naming and Fader.
  3. Select the input. On DM5 you can turn on Set by SEL and choose the channel with the Select glass key. The DM7 manual lets Fader Assist hold up to four groups of input channels.
  4. Enable the assist you chose. HA Assist shows a recommended gain on the single-channel and 12-channel gain screens. Leave gain compensation off or that number will be off.
  5. For Naming Assist, listen before you accept the instrument. Accepting it writes the icon and the channel name. On DM5, Comp Assist only runs on Dynamics 2 and only on Legacy Comp, Comp 260, FET Limiter or Diode Bridge Comp.
  6. Use Fader Assist as a first balance, in rehearsal. On DM7, Auto mode applies the suggestion and Manual mode waits for you. A finger on the fader takes that channel out of Fader Assist. Check the result yourself on pairs and linked channels.

FAQ

Is this a chat assistant or an MCP server?

It is a set of console functions. You turn them on per channel from the Assist screen. The DM7 research note is where Yamaha describes Naming Assist as machine learning and HA Assist and Fader Assist as math on the input. That note's "virtual mixing partner" is the research direction, separate from the screens documented in the manuals.

Which desks have all four?

The DM5 product page lists HA, Naming, Comp and Fader Assist for both DM5 and DM7. The DM5 user guide is the source for the Dynamics 2 and compressor-type limits on Comp Assist. The DM7 Assist chapter documents HA, Naming and Fader, including Manual and Auto for the faders.

Will it finish the mix?

Fader Assist aims at a starting balance. Yamaha's research note says the target is musically sensible and leaves the artistic moves to the engineer. Suggested fader values are unreliable on channel pairs and linked channels, on both the DM5 guide and the DM7 manual.
